Forester Research: A Primer for Health Care Leaders
This report examines the development and distribution of open source software,
a well-established software development model, and a potential solution to the looming challenges of integration, characterized by collaboration among
individuals and organizations with common interests, sharing intellectual property, and a commitment to standards. [link]
A model for open source software development
"Just as pharmaceutical companies work with biomedical researchers who publish peer-reviewed research for all to see, software companies should engage the open source software movement rather than be at cross purposes with it."
Wilbur Pan, M.D., Ph.D.
U.S. advised to promote open standards, source, innovation
A business- and university-led public policy group has issued a downloadable 72-page report examining open standards, open source software, and "open innovation." The report concludes that openness should be promoted as a matter of public policy, in order to foster innovation and economic growth in the U.S. and world economies.
RDMF.Net was developed over time based on the culmination of consulting work done
directly with cancer researchers at the University of Colorado Cancer Center to develop a concise, secure, and easily configurable
system for data capture of cancer-related studies and drug trials.
It became apparent that there was a need by researchers to be able to move forward with
online data entry and do away with error prone and inefficient paper-based systems without the
expense and complexity of large commercial vendors or the delays and issues related with internal IS development
Our approach was to deal directly with the reasearcher and focus on the data and communcations needs of the study or trial
and deliver working prototypes readily, making their limited time more useful
Our Design Goals:
Develop a platform of reuseable software components that are portable and non-commercial so that subscription-owners
have the option to take over ownership of the application and application services at the end of the subscription term
without any special hardware or operating platform.
Design for manageability and ease of administration through the use of software code-generation techniques and configuration
management.
To give back to the Open Source community by moving the RDMF Framework into an Open Source community for the benefit
of other institutions.
What emerged - RDMF:
Research Data Management Framework (RDMF)
an initiative for defining, configuring, building and deploying system applications for managing clinical research data management
RDMF Platform (RDMFP)
the technical implementation of a system developed using RDMF and running on RDMF.Net Hosted Services
RDMF Code Generator (RDMFCG)
the core components and framework for building an RDMF implementation
RDMF.net
the software and services offered for RDMF development, subscription configuration, building and hosting RDMF applications
and platform for hosting RDMF subscriptions
RDMF Subscription
an "Software-As-A-Service" bundle of data management, workflow and collaboration tools and services offered to the cancer research community.
RDMF.org
an upcoming community website where the RDMF Platform will continue to be developed and provide tools and services condusive
to collaboration and management of such an initiative
